On 14th of March 2009 five of us – David, Kevin, Joachim, James and Louis – and Fr Gerard Theraviam participated in the Relay for Life’s overnight celebration at Penang Youth Park. Relay for Life is an event that helps to bring awareness to the fight against cancer. Cancer survivors and participants relayed the track in the field for a total of 16 hours. Candles were lit all around the track, and people were welcome to join in and silently participated in the remembrance ceremony.

 

Alongside there were some wonderful entertainment, games, activities, food, exhibitions and health screenings. We also relayed round the track together with other participants to give our support. We willingly volunteered to offer our services to help clean the rubbish and lent a hand to carry things for the stalls and also shifting things here and there.

 

It was a touching experience for us to involve in this cancer awareness event. This was especially true for some of us who were previously engaged in pastoral care of the cancer patients at Mt Miriam Hospital.
